PRESS RELEASE

Black Requiem Cries Out, in Pain, for Justice

Mother and son duo create a unique multi-genre song to give voice to the Black experience.

[Denton, Texas, May 18, 2021] Black Requiem, a lyrical and musical response of pain and hope in the wake of relentless extrajudicial violence against Black bodies, launches today and is available for streaming across all platforms.

The inspiration for Black Requiem emerged from the violent racialized slaughters of Botham Jean, Atatiana Jefferson, Darius Tarver, and Lermont Stowers-Jones in the Dallas Fort Worth, Texas (DFW) area, and the murders of many others, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. The ongoing injustice and lack of accountability for the domestic terrorism of white supremacy, marginalization, implicit bias, and oppression in America is the setting for the creative justice piece.

Black Requiem is “a lament for our lives and a demand for our dignity,” says Katina Stone-Butler, aka KBuncomplicated, a classically trained singer/songwriter, creative, activist, and podcaster. She is also the founder of The Fountain, an organization that serves Black and other women of color via the intersectionality of culture, faith, and creativity. Stone-Butler shares the mic with Jamell “Jamie” Butler II, one of her three sons—professionally known as Miztick.

A requiem by Oxford’s definition is:

  • A mass for the repose of the souls of the dead.

  • A musical composition setting parts of a requiem mass.

  • An act or token of remembrance.

Drawing inspiration from the traditional requiem format in classical music. Black Requiem progresses through four musically diverse movements, weaving genres and rhythms from Black American musical legacies to represent lament, rage, perseverance, and hope. Black Requiem is unique to the current popular music landscape in that it spans twelve minutes with four songs, seamlessly linked as one track. It is a cry and a scream and a hymn and a spiritual, all in one song; a potent expression of the weathering angst of persistent injustice.

A portion of the proceeds from Black Requiem will go towards DFW area justice initiatives, foundations, and organizations to benefit families impacted by injustice.

Black Requiem is available on all streaming platforms, including Tidal, Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon.
